Climate of Norway

Required clothing: Be prepared for rapid and extreme weather changes. In Haugesund you can experience four seasons in one day. Bring warm clothes and rainwear.

The climate of Norway is much milder than that of most other regions as far north, especially along the country's west coast. Snow that falls along the coast often melts immediately. The warm North Atlantic Current of the Gulf Stream keeps nearly all the seaports ice-free, even in the northern regions. During winter, Norway's inland regions are colder than the coast because mountains block the warm west winds from the sea.

Snow covers the ground at least three months a year. During the summer months, when the sea is cooler than the land, the situation is different; then the west winds cool the coast more than the inland so the warmest summers are in the inland valleys of the southeast. Average temperatures vary between -10°C in January in Spitzbergen and +16°C in July in Oslo. Precipitation in Norway varies between 500 and 3000 mmm per year.

The most rain falls along the coastal areas, less rain falls inland and in the eastern parts of Norway.

Norway & the Vikings.
During the Viking Age (800-1050 AD) the Norwegian Vikings explored Europe through trade and warfare. With their Viking ships they traveled to the Mediterranean countries, to England, Scotland & Ireland, and as far as to America. The Viking age was characterized by expansion and immigration. Many Norwegians left the country to live in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and parts of Britain and Ireland.

Norways coastline.
Norway has an extensive and unique coast line, with islands, skerries, fjords, narrow passages & mountain peaks, stretching from Skagerak and the south of Norway along the North Sea to the Arctic Circle and northwards to the North Cape, the barren Finnmarken coast and the Barents Sea towards the Russian border.

Economy in Norway.
Norway has experienced rapid economic growth since the World war II, and is now amongst the wealthiest countries in the world, with a Scandinavian welfare system. Norway is the world’s third largest oil exporter.

Norway – a peaceful country.
As Norway has only approximately 5 million inhabitants Norway is considered a quiet, peaceful & safe country.

About Haugesund

In the southwest of Norway where the fjords flow out into the North Sea, you will find Haugesund. The geographical region is flanked by the Folgefonna glacier to the north and the mountain formation of Preikestolen to the south.

The regional centre Haugesund (population 40,000) is a young, vibrant city, and hosts several festivals. Among them is the Norwegian International Film Festival in August, which is one of the most important film festivals in Scandinavia.

The Viking Age is important to the region, as it was the kith and kin of the early princes who ensured that the base of power for the Viking Harald the Fairhaired was to be at Haugalandet (region) when he united Norway into one single kingdom.

One of the best sites to experience the viking roots is Avaldsnes at the Karmøy island, which is also known for its long and pale beaches.

If you want to experience the surrounding nature of the region, there are plenty of opportunities. You can for example take an excursion to the Langfoss waterfall, which has been nominated as one of the 10 most beautiful waterfalls in the world by CNN. Island hopping to Røvær and Utsira is also a popular activity, and locals will be more than helpful if you ask them for advice on the best hiking trips.
