Record of Service

Persons other than Norwegian nationals who want a document for registration of their sea service time on Norwegian vessels may have a Record of Service. There is no obligation on the seafarer to hold a Record of Service.

However, it is a right for those seafarers who want this document to have one. Record of Service can be obtained at a Norwegian foreign service mission or at the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (In norwegian).

Upon issuance the seafarer must present a valid passport or other authorized proof of identification, and documentation proving that the seafarer is working on board a Norwegian registered vessel. A Record of Service is not an identity document.

Norwegian Sea Service Book

A Norwegian Sea Service Book is an identity document reserved for Norwegian seafarers. Persons other than Norwegian nationals who want an equivalent identity document will have to get this from their country of nationality.

However, they may have a Record of Service where their sea service time on Norwegian vessels can be registered, although this is not an identity document.
