Recreational vessels less than 24 meters are no longer subject to compulsory measurement

The objective is harmonization of the rules: Recreational vessels less than 24 meters do not fall within the scope of the Norwegian Ship Safety Act. Recreational vessels of 15 meters and more were previously subject to compulsory measurement and a Tonnage Certificate had to be issued before registration in the Ship Register could take place. This is no longer the case.
In practice, this means uniform requirements for registration of pleasure vessels under 24 meters. The measured data must be documented as described below.

Documentation of vessel measurements

Length, beam, draught or depth may be documented through a Builder’s Certificate from the producer, general arrangement drawings, approved CE-documentation or other statement from the producer or equivalent documentation which the Registrar finds acceptable.

Obligation to register

Kindly note that all vessels of 15 meters and more are still subject to mandatory registration and that their names must be approved by the Department of Ship Registration.
