Why choose voluntary registration of a recreational craft in the NOR

The advantages and opportunities of registration in the NOR are many. Learn more about why you should choose to register your recreational craft between 7 and 15 m. Note: All Norwegian owned vessels of 15 m or more are subject to mandatory registration.

Security and legal protection

Registration in NOR ensures approved ownership of the boat and helps protect both the seller and the buyer during a sale. The legal protection provided by NOR ensures that only the registered owner can sell the boat.

Are you buying a new boat?

Always check if it is registered in NOR. In addition to getting information on the registered owner, you will also find out if there are any voluntary mortgages or enforcement liens registered against the boat. For registered boats, enforcement liens are also registered in NOR.

Possibility for a faster sale

Are you selling the boat? Registration in NOR provides access to a larger group of buyers and leads to a faster sale as it facilitates financing for the buyer. That's why many write "the boat is registered in the Ship Register" in their sales ads on, for example, "Finn.no".

Easier financing

When the boat is in NOR, it can be used as security (collateral) so that you can take out a loan. Don't need a loan yourself? NOR registration can still be valuable for a future sale.

"Certificate of Nationality" documenting measurements and registered owner

All boats registered in NOR can be issued a free Certificate of Nationality. Such a certificate can be important to have on foreign trips. Check-in at port, customs, and immigration offices has proven to be much smoother for boat owners who have the certificate on board.

Visible marking of the radio call sign for clear identification and tracking

When registering in NOR, the radio call sign/VHF is linked to the boat and becomes its unique identification. All boats entered for the first time receive weather-resistant markings to be applied on both sides. This way, the boat becomes easily visible for hailing and tracking.
Registration in NOR makes tracking of abandoned pleasure boats, boats that have broken loose in storms, or stolen boats easier for all involved parties.

Environmental responsibility

By registering your boat in NOR, you take environmental responsibility and ensure that it is traceable.

All changes in registered information must be reported to NOR

The importance of an updated register follows from all the advantages above.
For the register to be up to date, we depend on the owner, seller, and buyer remembering to report when changes are made to registered information and during sales. This obligation is also enshrined in the Maritime Code.

Together we help secure the legal protection of the boat, owner, and encumbrances.
