Duty to register and legal protection

See what obligations you have as an owner, and what rights registration in the Ship Register triggers.

Vessels over 15 meters

Must be reported for registration within 30 days of delivery from the workshop or after the vessel was considered Norwegian.

All registered vessels

The owner is obliged to report all changes in registered information to the Ship Register within 30 days.

In the event of re-registration of a new owner, both the seller and the buyer are responsible.

In the event of a sale to a foreign owner so that the vessel is no longer considered Norwegian, it is the seller's responsibility to follow up.

What rights can be registered in the Ship Register?

Documents can be registered that create, modify, transfer, retain or revoke a right to a registered vessel. Only those who have had their ownership approved by the Ship Register, or those who can document that they have taken over ownership upon the owner's death, can be granted a legal basis for the register.

Legal protection in bankruptcy

In order for a voluntarily established right to have legal protection in bankruptcy, the right must be entered in the Ship Register no later than the day before the opening of bankruptcy.

For the sale of unregistered vessels under 15 metres, handover is subject to legal protection conditions.
