Welfare and wellbeing

Welfare for seafarers, in a broad sense, covers all measures and services intended to ensure seafarers’ wellbeing, health, recreation, leisure, social needs, and quality of life both on board the ship and in port. Recreation involves activities that provide relaxation, recovery, and enjoyment, contributing to increased wellbeing and comfort and reducing stress. Both shipowners and the NMA have a responsibility, in their respective roles, for ensuring the welfare of seafarers, including facilitating meaningful leisure time while on board and in port. Here you will find an overview of the welfare services provided by the NMA, as well as recommendations and suggestions for what shipping companies and vessel crews themselves can do to promote well‑being on board.
