Where can I find information about the boating exam as an elective?
As part of the subject renewal in 2019, the boating exam was included in the elective course "Nature, environment and outdoor life". Traveling by boat along the coast and on lakes is an important part of outdoor life in Norway, and by taking this as an elective, more people will gain knowledge and skills that make boating safer for themselves and others.
More information about the introduction of the boating exam as an elective subject can be found on the Government's website and the curriculum for the subject can be found on the Directorate of Education and Training's website.
In order for it to be possible for the pupils to take the boating exam at school, the school must offer training in the curriculum for the boating exam, and the schools can also apply to become a test centre, so that the test can be taken at school.
More information about the boating licence can be found in the Norwegian Maritime Authority's guidelines.
How can the school become a test centre?
Norsk Test AS operates the boating exam for the Norwegian Maritime Authority and is responsible for issuing boating lisences and approval of test centres for the boating exam.
In order to be approved as a test center for the boating exam, the school must therefore apply for approval from Norsk Test. Among other things, there are requirements for course rooms, access to computers and the organization in order to become an approved test center.

How do we get teaching materials?
There are many syllabus books for preparation for the boating exam, and the books have not been approved by the NMA, but the authors have used the syllabus from the NMA as a starting point when determining the books.
It is recommended that the schools themselves decide which books or any online courses can be used in teaching.
