LRIT - Long Range Identification and Tracking

Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) is a global satellite-based system for real-time identification and tracking of particular types of vessels. The system is managed and maintained by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

LRIT was introduced in Norway in 2009 and is a closed system that is only used by national public authorities.

LRIT is mandatory for the following ships navigating in international traffic:

  • Passenger ships, including high-speed passenger vessels,
  • Cargo ships over 300 gross tonnage and
  • Movable offshore drilling units.

Information from the LRIT marine surveillance system is used by public authorities to:

  • in conjunction with traffic monitoring,
  • control and intervention against vessels that pose a danger to maritime safety or a threat to a coastal state,
  • to locate vessels in distress and surrounding vessels in connection with rescue operations, and
  • to monitor vessels involved in illegal, unreported or unregistered fishing or other illegal activities.

LRIT - The role of the Norwegian Maritime Authority

The Norwegian Maritime Authority has the official responsibility for enforcing compliance with LRIT regulations on board.

LRIT reporting and equipment

All vessels over 300 gross tonnage registered to sail in international waters are required to obtain LRIT certificate.

These are issued by Application Service Providers (ASP). You will find approved ASPs in the list below.

Military vessels and fishing vessels are excluded from this rule.

LRIT reports has to be sent to The Norwegian Coastal Administration.

Read more about this on The Norwegian Coastal Administration website.
