General information about the scheme

Competent persons of type B who are approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) will be authorised to perform the following tasks on ships:

  • Annual and five-year inspections when the crane has been designed and inspected for the first time in accordance with the "Regulations No. 4 of 17 January 1978 on loading and unloading facilities on ships."

Approval as a competent person of type B by the NMA can be granted if the applicant meets the prerequisites.

Prerequisites for approval

  • The applicant must generally hold a qualification from a technical vocational school relevant to the inspection of cranes. Relevant fields of study include operation and maintenance, welding, mechanics, etc. Courses, work experience, and associated mechanical certificates may compensate for the lack of formal technical education.
  • Extensive experience with cranes is a prerequisite.
  • The applicant must hold an inspector certificate – G20K. This also includes a requirement to complete qualifying modules necessary to provide prior knowledge.
  • The applicant must hold an inspector certificate for loose lifting equipment – G11K.
  • The applicant must have documented training in the inspection of steel wire.

A checklist must be prepared for annual and five-year inspections, covering all the regulatory requirements with point-by-point references to the relevant sections of the regulations.

The person conducting the annual and five-year inspections of a crane must act independently. This independence refers to the lack of ties to the crane supplier, the shipping company that operates the vessel, the company that owns the vessel on which the crane is installed, and shipyards that sell a final product with a certified crane installed on the vessel.

Applications for approval

When the prerequisites have been met, an application can be sent to  post@sdir.no.

Initially, a brief application text should be submitted along with an attached CV, diploma, G20K course certificate, G11K course certificate for loose lifting equipment, and course certificate for steel wire inspection.

All crane-relevant experience must be disclosed (either in the CV or otherwise).
