General information about the scheme

Competent persons of type B-1 approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) will, on ships and mobile offshore units flying the Norwegian flag, be authorised to perform:

  • Annual and five-year inspections

Approval as a competent person type B-1 by the NMA may be granted if the applicant meets the prerequisites.

Prerequisites for approval

  • As any approval is based on the regulations for mobile facilities, it is an absolute prerequisite to have relevant experience with large offshore cranes, including AOPS/MOPS.
  • The applicant must have a relevant vocational certificate.
  • The applicant must hold an inspector course for this type of crane – G5K. This also entails a requirement to take qualifying modules that are necessary prior knowledge.
  • The applicant must have documented training in the control of steel wire.
  • The applicant must have a course in the inspection of loose lifting equipment - G11K

There must be checklists for periodic inspection of all cranes covered by NMA's crane regulations.

The competent person shall:

  • immediately notify NMA of dangerous conditions (on Norwegian-flagged vessels)
  • Be present (on-site) throughout the inspection process. Parts of the job cannot, therefore, be left to others unless the competent person is present and supervises everything that may be done by others.

Applications for approval

When the prerequisites have been met, an application can be sent to post@sdir.no. Initially, only a brief text/application is required, with an attached CV, course certificate, checklists and procedures for carrying out the control.

All crane-relevant experience must be disclosed (either in the CV or otherwise)
