Competent person type A
General information about the scheme
Type A qualified persons approved by the NMA will, on ships, be able to do:
- First-time, annual and five-year inspections when a crane is constructed in accordance with "Regulations No. 4 of 17 January 1978 on loading and unloading facilities on ships"
Approval as a NMA competent person type A can be obtained if the applicant meets the prerequisites.
Prerequisites for approval
- It is basically a prerequisite with a minimum engineering education with a relevant subject specialization. As an alternative, a technical vocational school may be considered if the candidate has extensive relevant work experience. The expertise relevant to crane calculations must be maintained.
- In addition to relevant education, the applicant should have solid experience with both cranes and strength/structure calculations.
- The applicant must hold an inspector course - G20K. This also entails a requirement to take qualifying modules that are necessary prior knowledge.
- The applicant must hold an inspector course for loose lifting equipment – G11K.
- The applicant must have documented training in the control of steel wire.
A checklist must be prepared for initial inspections that includes all the requirements of the Regulations with point-by-point reference to the Regulations section where requirements exist. In addition, a corresponding checklist must be prepared for annual and 5-year check-ups.
The person who is to carry out the initial inspection of a crane must have an independent role. Independent role refers to relationships with the crane supplier, affiliation with the shipping company that operates the vessel, the company that owns the vessel on which the crane is installed, and shipyards that sell an end product with certification of a crane on board a vessel.
Applications for approval
When the prerequisites have been met, an application can be sent to post@sdir.no.
Initially, a brief text/application will be sent with attached CV, diploma, G20K course certificate, inspector course for loose lifting equipment G11K and course certificate for control of steel wire.
All crane-relevant experience must be disclosed (either in the CV or otherwise).
