Cyber security as part of ISM
Since 1 January 2021, cyber security has been a mandatory part of the safety management for ships and shipping companies. A useful tool in the implememtation of cyber securoty as part of ISM is The Guidelines on Cyber Security Onboard Ships (bimco.org), developed by BIMCO and others.
Anyone undergoing an ISM audit in the future will discover that cyber security is now part of the audit.
Strategy for maritime cyber security
In 2020, the NMA and the Norwegian Coastal Administration made a strategy for maritime cyber security together with the Norwegian National Security Association and the Norwegian Communications Authority. The strategy was drawn up on behalf of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Transport, and it was accepted in 2022.
As an important outcome of the strategy, a "Sector Response Environment" (SRM) for Cybersecurity in the Maritime Sector (kystverket.no) was established in January 2024. The Norwegian Coastal Administration has the main responsibility for the operation of SRM and the Norwegian Maritime Authority and Norma Cyber assists as an operational party.
