Who are we?
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) is an administrative agency under the Ministry of Trade Industry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
The NMA is the administrative and supervisory authority in matters related to safety of life, health, material values and the environment on vessels flying the Norwegian flag and foreign ships in Norwegian waters. The NMA is also responsible for ensuring the legal protection of Norwegian-registered ships and registered rights in those ships. The NMA's activities are subject to national and international legislation, agreements and political decisions.
Our main tasks include:
- Safeguarding life, health, property and the environment
- Registering vessels and rights in vessels
- Supervising the construction and operation of vessels flying the Norwegian flag abd the companies operating these vessels
- Issuing certificates to seafarers and supervising Norwegian training institutions
- Supervising foreign ships in Norwegian ports
- Supervising and promoting good working and living conditions on vessels
- Managing and developing Norwegian and international legislation
- Marketing Norway as a flag state
- Administering grant schemes on behalf of the Ministry
- Monitoring the risk picture
- Carrying out preventive work to reduce the number of accidents in both the recreational fleet and the commercial fleet
