Seafarers who are to serve on ships carrying oil, chemicals or gas as cargo in liquid bulk must hold a Tanker Certificate of either the lowest or highest degree.
Lowest grade:
Seafarers who are to carry out certain duties and responsibilities in connection with cargo or cargo equipment on tankers shall hold a Tanker Lowest Rank Certificate of Proficiency.
Highest degree
Seafarers who are to lead and have direct responsibility for cargo operations as well as cargo handling and other tasks related to the cargo on tankers must hold a Certificate of Proficiency Tanker Highest Rank

Lowest grade:
- 3 months' seagoing service on oil, chemical or gas tankers
Seagoing service can also be earned in a redundant position on board.
Highest Grade:
- 3 months' seagoing service on oil, chemical or gas tankers with a valid certificate of proficiency Tanker Lowest Grade, and completed and passed approved course for Tanker Highest Grade
If the applicant is not a holder of a tanker certificate of the lowest grade, seagoing service must have been earned after completing the tanker's course highest or lowest grade. Seagoing service can also be earned in a redundant position on board.
Please note that those who go into positions as cadets and apprentices MUST have been issued a tanker certificate of the lowest degree, before they earn seagoing service to apply for the highest degree.
