How to document seagoing service from polar waters?
The company must state in the seagoing service confirmation that the vessel has a polar ship certificate and the trade area in which the vessel has operated (open polar waters or other polar waters).
Seagoing service is approved on ships that operate, or have operated, in the Baltic Sea when there is ice in the area, or in similar icy waters. Seagoing service can also be earned in a relevant position on fishing vessels operating in waters with ice.
What is meant by open polar waters and other polar waters?
Open polar waters: areas where navigation can take place unhindered with sea ice concentrations of less than 1/10. In open polar waters, there should be no ice formed on land.
Other polar waters: areas that are not ice-free or open, or open waters where glacier ice is present.
