Endorsement for masters
Special requirements for masters on Norwegian ships
- To serve as a master, individuals must complete a NIS course at an approved training center.
- If an applicant is a citizen of a country outside the EEA and plans to serve as a master on a Norwegian ship, they must also apply for an exemption from the nationality requirement.
Applications for an exemption from the nationality requirement must be submitted electronically via Altinn or sent by e-mail or post to the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA).
Applying for a nationality requirement exemption for master from non-EEA countries
Applications for an exemption from the nationality requirement can be submitted electronically via Altinn or sent by e-mail or post to the NMA.
For applications submitted by post or email, please include:
- a completed application for exemption from the nationality requirement
- the name of the company to be included in the exemption
- the master's name and date of birth
- the name(s) of vessel(s) for which the exemption is requested
- the organisation number of the Norwegian shipping company
