Safety for Fishing tourists in Norway

Information that can improve safety in boats for tourists.

A lack of knowledge about boating and the conditions along the Norwegian coast has led to many accidents involving the use of pleasure boats among tourists.

Information booklet "Safe at sea in Norway"

The information booklet "Safe at sea in Norway" can  help ensure that the tourist receives the necessary information, while at the same time the lessor must have the opportunity to document that the necessary training is provided.

The brochure contains a checklist that the customer and lessor should go through together, as well as useful tips on laws and regulations for boat licenses, vest use and catching fish.

The leaflet is available as a PDF in English.

The material has been distributed to landlords, tourist offices and others who are in contact with foreign fishing tourists.

Rental of leisure boats

There are no special requirements for recreational boats that are rented out without a driver to tourists. However, there are requirements for landlords through the Product Control Act.

The boat rental also has a responsibility for the tourist's safety. The Product Control Act states, among other things, that the landlord must take reasonable measures to prevent the service from causing harm to health, and furthermore that the landlord is obliged to provide the user of the service with sufficient and relevant information to be able to assess safety himself.

DSB has published a guide called "The Consumer Service Boat Rental".

The Directorate of Fisheries has its own website on recreational fishing with information in several languages.
