Upon suspicion of legal offences in connection with marine accident, the investigation will be carried out by the police.

The previous special arrangement for maritime situations was suspended through changes in the Norwegian Maritime Code and the new Ship Safety and Security Act of 2007-02-16. Accordingly, the arrangement of maritime investigators and maritime inquiries was abolished.

An accident on/or involving a ship is now handled the same way as other types of accidents, and the responsibility for criminal investigation lies with the individual police district.
Rogaland Police District (Dept. for the North Sea and the Environment) is responsible for the marine subject area and gives technical assistance to the individual police districts upon request.
