The NMA is responsible for control of Norwegian ships. However, inspection and supervision is delegated to the recognized classification societies.

This year's meeting took place at the NMAs headquarters in Haugesund, Thursday 9 April.

Host of the meeting was Director General of Shipping and Navigation, Olav Akselsen. Akselsen presented the recent development of the NIS and NOR registers and what kind of activities NMA focuses on to be the preferred maritime administration for shipowners.

Helge Topp from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) also attended the meeting. He informed that the regulations for electrical installations on ships would be simplified. One example is that the requirements hereafter will be based on internationally recognised standards.

Here are some of the other topics that were discussed during the dialogue meeting:

  • Norway's position and progress on the Paris MOU 'White List "and findings from unannounced inspections on board Norwegian ships;

  • Findings from the Authorities "Vertical Revisions" of delegated supervisory authority;

  • Samples of the Norwegian maritime industry's contribution to vessels of the future (the future is here).

The NMA has agreements with the following recognised classification societies:

  • American Bureau of Shipping - ABS
  • Bureau Veritas BV
  • DNV GL
  • Lloyds Register of Shipping LR
  • RINA S.p.A
  • Class NK Nippon Kaiji Kyokai
