Covid-19 and registrations in the Norwegian Ship Register (NIS/NOR)

  • Published: 24/04/2020

In several countries, it is currently not possible to obtain notarial statements or legalization/Apostille on documents as required. Lock- and shutdown of courier services for a period complicates submission of necessary originals for registration.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority will consider solutions case-by-case in order to protect all parties and ensure that ships can sail.

In many cases, provisional registration will be acceptable. The Registrar must, however, feel confident that the rectifications will be made within a given time limit from entry into the journal.

If certificates from foreign Ship Registers cannot be amended with an Apostille or legalized, we will consider if the Ship Register in question and person signing is known to so that an exemption may be granted.

New ship mortgages must always be provided in original before registration can take place.
