The Gulf of Oman incident

On 13 June 2019, at 06.03, the Marshall Island flagged tanker, the Front Altair, was attacked between the Emirates and Iran. There were reportedly tree detonations on board the ship. The crew have been rescued by a passing ship and no injuries are reported.

Adjusted security level for Norwegian vessels

The ship is now on fire, and measures to resolve the situation have been implemented. A second tanker, the Kokuka Courageous, has reportedly also been attacked in the same area.

Due to the Fujairah attacks on 12 May and today's attacks, the Norwegian Maritime Authority urges Norwegian ships to exercise extreme caution in the region.

Based on today’s incidents, even though the background for the attacks is not completely clear, the Norwegian Maritime Authority advices all ships to keep a safe distance from Iranian waters.

The NMA raises the security level to ISPS 2 for Norwegian Ships in the area delimited by the positions between N25^o and N28^o and between E54^o and E58^o.

The Front Altair does not sail under the Norwegian flag. Any questions regarding the incident on this ship must be directed to the company or the flag State.
